A little about Cessnock: Situated in the Hunter Valley Wine Country of New South Wales is the famous city of Cessnock. Only approximately 52 kilometres west of Newcastle, it was named after the Cessnock Estate grant of land enacted in 1826.
Once known as “The Coalfields,” it is now the entrance city to the Hunter Valley vineyards. Other regions in the rich Valley include Mount View, Broke, Pokolbin, Rothbury and Branxton.
The shift from an affluent mining community to a lush wine region was at times a difficult course of events, however, once the decline of the mining industry became apparent, the wine production grew rapidly with resultant employment opportunities.
The Darkinjung Aboriginals were the original inhabitants of the Cessnock area for over 3,000 years, and as European contact was made, more and more of the local inhabitants died as a consequence of battles with the settlers or after contracting European diseases. Many were even forced into adjacent tribal lands and were later killed. Nonetheless, many Aboriginal place names are still in existence around Cessnock, including Kurri Kurri, Wollombi, Congewai and Laguna.
The name of Cessnock arrived from the Scottish settler John Campbell from his grandfather’s Cessnock Castle in Ayrshire. From 1850, the township gradually developed as a service centre at the intersection of the Great North Road from Hunter Valley to Sydney, having outlets to Singleton and Maitland.
Cessnock’s Hunter Valley region is now regarded as one of Australia’s oldest wine growing areas with over 1,800 hectares under vine. A flourishing tourism industry is now focussed on the rich volcanic soils of the vineyards of Allandale, Mount View and Pokolbin. During the 1990s, a tourism and property boom resulted from the completion of the F3 Freeway.
Quite apart from the wine industry, other developing tourist attractions include hot-air ballooning, championship golf courses, skydiving and guest house lodging. With a policy of urban renewal in the city since 2001, the City Council was reportedly one of the first to embark on a recycling program for waste disposal.
The majority of the employment comes from the local port city of Newcastle, and other key centres of Singleton and Maitland. Cessnock has many and varied sporting facilities, comprising leagues of different sports, and championship golf courses, one of which the world-renowned Jack Newton now has his Sub-Juniors Golf Tournament.
